Every day, people with disabilities go to work, attend classes, contribute to their communities, and make choices about how they want to live. They build routines, relationships, and lives filled with purpose and connection. For many, those moments are made possible by the support they receive through Medicaid. These supports are not extras. They are essential. And now, they’re in danger.

The Medicaid cuts we all spoke out against have been signed into law. It’s not the result we hoped for. And for the people we support, their families, and the community who stand beside them, it’s a hard moment.

What Medicaid Cuts Mean

When states receive less Medicaid funding, they’re forced to prioritize mandatory services like hospital stays and long-term care. What often gets left behind are “optional” services like home- and community-based services (HCBS). But there’s nothing optional about HCBS for people who rely on them to live life on their own terms.

HCBS empowers people with disabilities to live independently, stay connected to their communities, and access supports like job coaching and skill building. When funding is reduced, those who rely on these services face longer waitlists, fewer available options as providers are forced to scale back or close their doors, and greater barriers to getting the support they need to thrive.

At Aspire, we’ve built our work around the belief that every person deserves a life filled with meaning, belonging, and choice. Medicaid makes that possible. And when it’s threatened, we all need to speak up.

Now’s the Time to Share Your Story

While this bill has become law, this moment is not the end. Your voice still matters. In fact, it’s one of the most important tools we have to move forward.

With members of Congress back in their home districts this August, now is the time to help them understand what these cuts mean in real life. You don’t need a polished speech. You just need your story. Talk about the services you or your loved one receive. Share what those supports make possible. Be honest about what it looks like when they’re not there.

Aspire is proud to partner with ANCOR, the leading voice in Washington for community-based disability service providers. They’ve made it easy to share your story and ensure it gets to the right people. You can use their tool at ancor.org/share-your-story.

Every time someone shares their story, it helps decision-makers understand the real impact of their choices and why protecting and expanding access to HCBS is critical.

Your voice matters. And now is the time to use it.
