Aspire supports neurodiverse children and adults as they discover their passions, unlock potential, and thrive. That work is made possible by employees who show up each day with care, consistency, and a commitment to the people they support. The employee spotlight series highlights team members whose work brings that mission to life.
Meet Patricia Bastian, day options coordinator in Maryland. Patricia understands firsthand how powerful it can be when people feel truly seen for who they are, rather than judged by assumptions or first impressions. Inspired by her own experiences as the mother of a son on the autism spectrum, Patricia joined the Aspire team five and a half years ago wanting to help people build confidence, connection, and independence, all while feeling comfortable being themselves. It’s that personal perspective that shapes the patience, warmth, and understanding she brings to her work every day.
We sat down with Patricia to hear more about her journey.
What’s the day-to-day look like in your role?
How have you grown since joining Aspire?
“I’ve grown from simply following tasks to developing creative problem-solving ideas that really help people achieve their goals. I’ve also built new skills in helping people navigate day-to-day situations and challenges.”
What’s your favorite memory from your time here?
“The first time we stepped into our vegetable garden, it was filled with the results of hard work and dedication. We had grown every plant from seed, carefully planting and nurturing them. The individuals’ faces lit up with pride as they saw what they had accomplished. They eagerly picked fresh vegetables and used them to create a recipe to enjoy the fruits of their labor together.”
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned?
“It’s important to avoid judging people based on first impressions. You’ll often be surprised by their true character. It’s better to get to know someone than base your understanding of them on what’s written in their file.”
Tell us a little about yourself outside of work.
“I’m originally from Philadelphia, and my family moved here about 20 years ago because of my husband’s job. I have my bachelor’s degree in education, but before joining Aspire, I worked third-shift jobs while raising and helping support my five children.
These days, I enjoy spending time with my chickens, going to estate sales, and traveling whenever I can. Something people may not know about me is that I collect granny square blankets.”
What would you say to someone thinking about joining the Aspire team?
“Our first priority is always the individuals we serve. The work is 90% pure joy and 10% hard work and dedication, which makes it feel both meaningful and rewarding.”
What started as a desire to give back to the same community that supported her own family has grown into a career where Patricia has found fulfillment in building connections that help people feel comfortable, capable, and valued.
