At Aberdeen Proving Ground, an Army facility in Maryland, Keith has found more than just a job—he’s built a foundation for independence and personal growth. As a custodian, Keith has honed his skills and gained invaluable vocational experience, transitioning from weekly on-site visits with his support team to weekly phone check-ins and monthly meetings with his supervisor. This evolution reflects the confidence and self-sufficiency he has developed through his work.
Keith’s hard work and dedication were recently celebrated in a big way. The Harford County Department of Community Services’ Office of Disability Services and the Commission on Disabilities honored him with the Employee Award of Merit. This prestigious award recognizes employees with disabilities who have exhibited exceptional ability and determination in the workplace—a fitting accolade for someone as committed as Keith.
The award was presented during a ceremony attended by over 80 guests. The event not only celebrated individuals like Keith but also recognized employers, organizations, and advocates who are shaping a more inclusive workforce. Held annually in October, this event aligns with National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). This year’s theme, “Access to Good Jobs for All,” emphasized the critical need for creating more quality employment opportunities for people with disabilities, ensuring they have access to high-quality, equitable jobs where they can thrive in the workplace.
Keith’s story highlights the impact of supported employment opportunities, which, combined with his determination to succeed, foster independence and growth. It also underscores the valuable contributions people with disabilities bring to the workforce when given the chance to showcase their talents.
