This National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we’re highlighting three individuals—Keith, Jack, and Aidan—who have taken charge of their employment journeys by crafting careers around their unique skills, goals, and interests.

Meet Keith!

Keith has been honing his skills and gaining invaluable vocational experience as a custodian at Aberdeen Proving Ground, an Army facility in Maryland. What started as weekly on-site visits has evolved into weekly phone check-ins and monthly meetings with his supervisor, showcasing how he has grown in both independence and confidence through his work. This month, Keith is being honored with the Employee Award of Merit by the Harford County Department of Community Services’ Office of Disability Services and the Commission on Disabilities. A well-deserved recognition of his commitment over the years! When asked about his favorite part of being part of the workforce, Keith shared, “The feeling of self-worth and bringing home a paycheck to contribute to my household.”

Meet Jack!

While building essential vocational and employability skills in the ALL Academy transition program, Jack is taking his future into his own hands. Not only has he secured two jobs—one at a movie theater where he handles concessions, cleaning, and greeting customers, and another as a barista serving up coffee—but he’s also making the most of the volunteer sites offered through the program.

Jack is committed to improving his social skills, recognizing that interacting with coworkers and customers in both roles is helping him progress toward his goals. On top of that, he’s fantastic at managing his finances, saving more than he spends, a skill he’s proud to keep building.

Meet Aidan!

Aidan’s path is one of exploration and curiosity. As a participant in the ALL Academy transition program, he volunteers at various sites, including Petco, Hudson Paper Supply, and the Discovery Museum. His favorite volunteer site, however, is the Beardsley Zoo, where he gets to visit the animals after completing his tasks. Through these experiences, he’s developing valuable customer service, teamwork, and time management skills.

Keith, Jack, and Aidan are not just participating in the workforce—they are actively shaping their futures. Each of their employment journeys is unique, reflecting their unique talents, passions, and goals. Aspire is honored to celebrate each step they take towards a fulfilling future.
